JOB TITLE: Senior Project Engineer

FUNCTION: Engineering : Asset Development

LOCATION: Rotherham / Stocksbridge

REPORTS TO: Department Engineer, Project Engineering Department

To evaluate, define and implement projects in line with the annual capital development plan. Undertake the role of Project Manager/Project Engineer to ensure that the project scope is delivered safely, on time, within budget and to the agreed quality.


1. Understand the project requirements, define success criteria and agree the project scope.

1. Investigate and evaluate the technical options and develop the preferred solutions in line with the project requirements and also within the constraints of time, cost and quality.

1. Provide budget estimates and control project costs employing value engineering techniques as required.

1. Develop project schedules and manage resources to ensure the key milestones are met.

1. Produce documented project plans to provide the best chance of project success.

1. Manage quality through specifying, auditing, checking, reviewing and testing.

1. Manage project issues, risks, stakeholders, scope, and change to help ensure project success.

1. Assist the Project Sponsor in developing business case documentation.

1. Attend and participate in project meetings and reviews

1. Manage the procurement process to ensure that enquiries are issued, tenders evaluated, contracts agreed, orders placed, variations managed and invoices paid.

1. Specify plant, tools and equipment and oversee design, manufacture, installation and commissioning to ensure that assets supplied or modified as part of the project are fit for purpose and comply with relevant company, national and international standards.

1. Prepare project reports and issue to the relevant stakeholders.

1. Plan and manage all work to ensure that it is done in line with the safety, health and environmental (SHE) policies and legislation.

1. Plan and co-ordinate all site based activities to ensure that they are done safely, efficiently and with minimal disruption to business as usual activities.

1. Provide professional engineering support to Works Engineering and Operations teams.

1. Ensure compliance with the Company Asset Management Framework (CAMF) and department Project Management Methodology (PMM).

1. Manage project documentation to ensure that it is produced, stored and disseminated in line with the department PMM.

1. Ensure recommended spares lists are issued and that sufficient training is supplied as part of the project.

1. Ensure drawing records and the asset register are updated.

1. Assist/take a lead in the continuous improvement of project management and engineering standards and procedures at Tata Steel Speciality Steels.

1. Support others in the department through training and coaching.

1. Deputise for the Department Engineer when required.


The jobholder will be a member of the Project Engineering department and will be required to lead a team delivering projects and/or work as part of a team delivering projects.

The jobholder will be required to interface with people at all levels within the business including senior managers, engineers, operations, procurement, subject matter experts as well as people outside the business such as contract managers and site managers.



• Engineering Qualifications e.g. Degree / Masters
• Project Management Qualification e.g. APMP
• Health & Safety Qualifications e.g. IOSH /NEBOSH
• Chartered Engineer (or working towards it)
• 5+ Years of experience in a project engineer role
